1 Samuel 23:16 states, “And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.”

In this chapter, David fled for his life from the rage of Saul and hid in the wilderness of Ziph. For David, despair and fear had become new acquaintances. Saul’s hand of violence spread far seeking his death. Yet, out of all his wicked foes, David had a great friend. The Word of God says that Jonathan left his comfort in the kingdom to comfort his friend in the woods. Notice that David needed someone who would not only be there in time of need, but also one who would “strengthen his hand in God.” Psalms 54 correlates with this point in time. What is amazing is that the beginning of David's Psalm is a cry for help, and somehow after the Selah refrain in verse three, David's sorrowful tune changes into a song of confidence. Could it be that it was Jonathan's bold act of kindness that bolstered David to declare, “Behold, God is mine helper (Vs. 4a)?”

Strengthening one's heart in God. This is what this site is all about. By and large, it is dedicated to minister's of the gospel. As a preacher, I realize the overwhelming responsibility given and have regrettably seen many laboring shepherds fall prey to the wolves of discouragement and fear. Many sinful downfalls, in the ministry, have happened during a time when the minister was “burned-out and depressed.” This answer does not excuse ones actions, but it does reveal that part of satan's tactic in stifling a servant of God is to push him into a weary state and blind him with doubt and depression. I truly believe that there is such a great need today for preachers to be ever vigilant in encouraging one another with faithful prayer, humble accountability, and loving counsel. Ultimately, we are to edify that we might glorify the name of Christ. This is the aim of this site.
